Armin Mühsam is a German-American painter based in Kansas City whose work investigates the relationship between natural and human-built spaces. Situated at the intersection of abstraction and representation, his paintings construct complex environments built from fragmented structures, shifting perspectives, and layered color, inviting viewers into scenes that feel both imagined and strangely familiar.
Mühsam received his BFA from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany, in 1994 and his MFA from Montana State University in Bozeman in 1997. In 2025, he retired from Northwest Missouri State University, where he had taught painting and drawing after moving to the United States in 2000.
A recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2014, Mühsam has presented nearly sixty solo exhibitions in the United States and internationally, including in Germany, France, Romania, and Hungary. His work has been reviewed and featured in publications such as Art Papers and New American Painting. He has completed residencies at 100 West in Corsicana, Texas, and the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming.
Mühsam is represented by Haw Contemporary in Kansas City, Missouri, and Galerie Fenna Wehlau in Munich, Germany, and was named a 2025 Studios Inc Artist-in-Residence.
